Pakistan's ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has at least 24 lawmakers openly opposed Prime Minister Imran Khan. They have announced to vote in the no-confidence motion against Imran Khan. As a result, there are fears that Imran Khan's power will be eroded.
The opposition moved a no-confidence motion in the lower house of Pakistan's parliament last week. Opposition groups called for a boycott of the country's economy and foreign policy. This was reported in a report in The Times of India.
According to the report, the disgruntled PTI MPs are currently staying at Sindhu House. The building is used to house important officials from Sindhu province who came to Islamabad. They have claimed that they are currently staying in the building due to the threat of kidnapping by government ministers.
Raja Riaz, a PTI MP from Sindhu House, said, "We will withdraw from the building if we are assured that no action will be taken against those who have declared a no-confidence motion against the Prime Minister."
Raja Riaz further said, ‘Currently 24 legislators are staying in this building. Many PTI lawmakers and ministers are also ready to come here. '
On the other hand, Pakistan's Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry said, "We are not resorting to blackmailing to save the government. We reject the culture of betrayal. "
A no-confidence motion requires the support of a majority of 172 of the 342 members of the lower house of parliament to succeed. Imran Khan still has a majority in the National Assembly. This includes 155 members of his PTI and 23 members of the alliance partners.
The opposition has 163 members. Opposition groups called for the beleaguered PM to resign.
