| Season 5 of Popular Series "The Diplomat" |
Drama is expected to continue around the complicated relationships of the two couples at the heart of this political thriller.
OTT platform Netflix has announced that it is making season 5 of the popular political thriller series "The Diplomat."
The company shared the decision on Thursday. The announcement came right after the release of the series' season 4.
According to the BBC, although the new season has been announced, there is no hint yet of what the story will be like. However, it is believed that the drama surrounding the complicated relationships of the two couples at the center of this political thriller will continue.
In the series, Keri Russell plays Ambassador Kate Wyler, and Rufus Sewell plays Vice President Hal Wyler. Meanwhile, Allison Janney and Bradley Whitford, who are appearing in the same frame again after The West Wing, play President Grace and Todd Penn, respectively.
Season 4 ended on an extremely dramatic note, in which the personal and political tensions of the two couples reached a peak. The fragile diplomatic situation between America and the United Kingdom, along with the turmoil in Kate's married life, collapsed at a catastrophic moment. Even as Kate tried to contain the crisis, President Grace and Vice President Hal plotted to seize Russia's powerful weapons, pushing the United States to the brink of war.
To maintain the balance of power, Kate Wyler and Todd Penn were then forced to join forces.
Other important roles in the series are played by Ato Essandoh, Ali Ahn, and Nana Mensah.
"The Diplomat" gained huge popularity on Netflix right from its debut in 2023. In the first four weeks after its release, its first season was watched for more than 173.46 million hours. The second season remained on the global top ten list for four consecutive weeks.
The recently released fourth season climbed to number three on the global chart in its second week and made the top ten in 63 countries. Earlier, Netflix had officially announced the fourth season before the third season was even released.
The series and its lead actress Keri Russell have received nominations for various prestigious awards, including the Golden Globe Awards. Keri Russell won a Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Award for her performance in the third season. In the same season, Allison Janney won the Emmy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her outstanding performance. The series also received Emmy nominations in a total of seven categories, including Best Drama Series.
"The Diplomat" was created by Debora Cahn. Alongside Russell, Zenzi Williams, Alex Graves, Peter Noah, and Eli Attie are involved as executive producers. All seasons of the series are available to watch on Netflix.
