| Operation Sundarban |
Bangladesh's Sundarbans is known not only for its natural beauty, biodiversity and the Royal Bengal Tiger. For many years, pirate activity in the forest has also been a major problem. The Bangla film "Operation Sundarban" is built around the pirates' crimes in the remote parts of the Sundarbans, the abduction of fishermen, the ransom demands, and the operations against them. Directed by Dipankar Dipon, the film tries to bring action, thriller, wildlife conservation and crime suppression together in one story.
In the story, several pirate gangs have held sway deep inside the Sundarbans for a long time. They abduct fishermen from different areas and keep them captive. Captives who are physically weak are brutally tortured. Those whose families might be able to pay are held hostage while the pirates try to extract ransom. As a result, life for the fishermen around the Sundarbans becomes uncertain and full of fear.
Law enforcement launches an operation to wipe out this criminal network. First, a team led by Lieutenant Commander Rishan Rayhan goes into the Sundarbans. Their main goal is to identify the pirate network and arrest its mastermind. During the investigation, the name of the bandit Gajal comes up. An operation is carried out to catch him, but the first attempt fails, and the situation becomes more complicated.
Later, another team led by Major Sayem Sadat conducts an operation in the Sundarbans. This time the team manages to capture Gajal, but a new mystery opens up. There are hints that the piracy involves not just local criminal gangs but also some more influential people. The story moves forward in search of answers to these questions: who is behind this criminal network, how does it operate, and how can they be brought to justice?
Acting and Characterization
One of the main attractions of Operation Sundarban is its large cast. Siam Ahmed plays Major Sayem Sadat, and his presence in an action role is an important part of the film. Ziaul Roshan, as Lieutenant Commander Rishan Rayhan, also plays a significant role from the very start of the story. The scenes of these two characters carrying out operations and confronting criminals drive the film's action.
Riaz plays Battalion Commander Ishtiaque Ahmed. Nusraat Faria appears as the tiger researcher Tania Kabir. Through her character, the research and conservation of Sundarbans wildlife, especially tigers, is woven into the story. Many other actors also appear in various roles, including Darshana Banik, Taskeen Rahman, Raisul Islam Asad, Shatabdi Wadud, Arman Parvez Murad, Manoj Pramanik, Samina Bashar, Rawnak Hasan and Tua Chakrabarty.
The presence of big stars makes the film attractive, but not every character gets an equal chance to develop in the story. Some characters may feel like they have limited screen time. Still, the effort to bring characters of different professions and identities into one story gives the film some variety.
Action, Visuals and the Sundarbans Setting
One of the film's main strengths is the scenery built around the Sundarbans. The story's atmosphere is created around rivers, forests, remote areas and the pirates' hidden hideouts. The action scenes try to maintain the tension of the operation. In particular, the clashes between the pirates and the operation teams, and the moments of searching for the criminal network, can arouse the viewer's interest.
Director Dipankar Dipon also brings in wildlife conservation alongside action and thriller. The Sundarbans is not shown merely as a playground for criminals; the importance of the forest and its biodiversity becomes part of the story. As a result, the film is not limited to a simple crime-suppression tale.
However, in some places the heavy emphasis on action and drama may disrupt the natural flow of the story. If some incidents had been presented in more detail, the characters' motives and the complexity of the criminal network would have been clearer to the audience. Similarly, if the dialogue and emotional expression in some scenes had been more restrained, the film's realism could have been greater.
Story and Screenplay: Where Are the Limitations?
The subject matter of Operation Sundarban is full of promise. Piracy in the Sundarbans, the safety of fishermen, an organized criminal network and wildlife conservation together offered the chance to make a powerful thriller. The film tries to make use of that potential. But if some parts of the story had more depth, the audience's experience could have been richer.
In particular, if the forces behind the criminal ring had been shown in more detail, the mystery and excitement of the story would have increased. The personal backgrounds of a few characters, and the reasons behind their decisions, could also have been shown more clearly. That would have let the film's emotional moments leave a longer-lasting impression.
Even so, the film's action-driven presentation, the Sundarbans setting and the crime-suppression operation carry the story forward. For those who like Bangla action thrillers, the film can be enjoyable.
Overall, How Is Operation Sundarban?
All in all, even if "Operation Sundarban" is not a great film, it is an enjoyable Bangla action thriller. The story had some room for novelty, and with more care in a few places the screenplay could have made the film stronger. But the Sundarbans backdrop, the operation against the pirates, the presence of several well-known actors and the action scenes help hold the audience's interest.
If you enjoy films about Bangladesh's natural environment and crime suppression, you can add this to your watchlist. Watching it without expecting a flawless story or deep characterization, and with a mindset to enjoy the action, the adventure and the Sundarbans-centered tale, is likely

Final verdict: Operation Sundarban is a film that, despite some limitations, tries to entertain the audience through its action, adventure and Sundarbans backdrop. Not great, but enjoyable: that is how the film can be summed up in brief.
