Many Russian men are going to war in Ukraine to escape from their wives

The Russia-Ukraine war has been going on for more than seven months. Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered to increase in military operations as the territories occupied in Ukraine are lost in this long war. After announcing a partial mobilization of troops in the country, it was announced that those with military experience would be called into battle.

In this situation, new information has been brought forward by a mayor of Russia. He says many Russian men volunteer to join the war in Ukraine to escape from domineering wives. This information was reported by Russian media (RT) on Sunday (October 2).

According to the report, the name of the mayor of Russia who commented on many Russian male volunteers joining the Ukraine war to escape from their wives is Yaroslav Shaposhnikov. He is the mayor of the coal-mining town of Vorkuta in the Komi Republic, Russia.

One-tenth of Russia's men volunteering with Ukraine went there to escape their domineering wives, the mayor claimed.

Shaposhnikov said during an online panel discussion called 'Open Vorkuta', "About 10 percent of the volunteers are going there (to the Ukraine battlefield) because their wives are probably used to a decent life...nagging and nagging."

Shaposhnikov, however, did not elaborate on what he based his 10 percent estimate on. However, the video of the meeting was posted by the mayor himself on social media. And soon it went viral and got massive media coverage.

Shaposhnikov was widely ridiculed for this. However, he did not back down from his statement and claimed that his comments were taken out of context in the media.

He told media outlet The Podium, "I am a patriot of my motherland. I can't objectively say what (the comment) looks like from the outside. Taking my words out of context, some have given their interpretation.

In his words, 'You have to watch the whole video, but in general, I stand by my position: women always stand behind men and support them. He must be supported in any situation.'

Russia started military operations in Ukraine at the end of February this year. After about seven months of this, the President of Russia recently announced a partial military mobilization to strengthen the Russian army.

In doing so, Moscow wants to mobilize 3 million Russian male citizens into the Reserve Army. Basically, Russia is looking to bring together those who have served in the military and have prior combat experience.

However, since Vladimir Putin's announcement about the call for reserve troops for the war in Ukraine, the protests in Russia have started, according to several international media. According to Russian law, gatherings without a permit are prohibited. Still, many large-scale protests took place across Russia's cities. Russian authorities arrested 1,000 people for protesting.

On the other hand, thousands of young people are trying to leave the country to avoid joining the Russian army. Long queues for emigration have formed at the border between Georgia and Finland. However, the information technology sector workers, bankers, and media workers do not have to join the army, the authorities said.
